Research and planning: Serif Fonts

Serif Fonts

Serif
The serif font is used for body texts, which is the main part of a printed text not including headlines, as they are considered easier to understand.

Sans Serif
Its a readable font thats easy on the eye therefore you can read it easily. It is much clearer than serif therefore is used for mass text such as text within the article.

Research and planning: Double Page Spread Language

Double Page Spread Language

Even though two magazines can base a double page spread on the same thing (such as an interview), they can both be written and be laid out in completely different ways.

For example here is a interview spread from a pop magazine:
This interview is surrounded by numerous bright colours such as pink, orange, blue and green. It is also put across to the reader in a fun way, obviously with a carrier bag of questions and small images for what type of question. More simpler sentences are used, some which are in speech bubbles/in a graphic to draw in teenagers and make the spread more exciting. Slang words such as 'OMG!' and 'LOL' will also be used in pop magazine articles, as stereotypically teenagers are the main people who use acronyms such as omg etc. Swearing would be prohibited from pop magazines as they can set an example for children and teenagers, and would get in a lot of trouble if they was setting a bad example. Different sections of the text are in different colours which will keep the market audiences attention. There is 3 different images on this page and lots of small graphics again to keep the market audiences focus.

And here is an example of a interview from an indie magazine:

This image sticks to the typical colour scheme for indie magazines, which is black, white and red as the typical target audience is an older age than pop, therefor the colours are more of a strict and deep shade. Black white and red are also easy on the eye, as with pop magazines the colours have to be bright to draw in young children as they would be persuaded by bright colours and appearance more than the actual content of the article. Where as teenagers or young adults would be more persuaded by the content of the magazine than just what it looks like, as it is tailored towards individuals specific intrests where as pop is more global. The article is set out formally as the target audience is of a older age, the writing is in small columns, in black and white, whereas in pop magazines there are bright coloured writing, speech bubbles etc. The language is also directed to an older audience as there can be swearing and inappropriate language, which would not be acceptable for young individuals to watch. There is only 1 image on the page to not distract people from the text, also the image is big so that there isn't too much writing, as even though the target audience is older, it isn't that much older and the audience may be put off by 2 whole pages of writing.

Research and planning: My Double Page Spread

My Possible Double Page Spreads

In Roughcopy I could create my double page spread on numerous things, such as:
  • A news article, giving information of a recent story from the news, featuring something to do with an artist or a music venue etc.
  • A story, to do with an artist or fan stories, from gigs etc.
  • An interview, from an artist or an upcoming artist, possibly including there recent or upcoming tour.
My double page spread will be on an interview. I will use this for my double page spread as the layout of an interview spread (formal but not overly formal) conveys my genre well as that is how my genre is and I will be able to show my genre well through that spread.

Research and planning: Other Possible Double Page Spreads

Other Possible Double Page Spreads

In magazines there are different articles what could be on a double page spread. Things such as:

  • A news story. Here is an example of a news double page spread:

News spreads are formal looking. They have a simple font, so it is easy readable. Also with a few simple pictures so it does not draw away the attention from the information.

  • A interview. Here is an example of a interview double page spread:
Interview spreads are quite formal looking as they have a professional font, and not things such as bubble writing. But they do not look overly formal as they have more colour then a news spread and they have pictures. They usually just have one large picture on interview spreads and they also include a quote from the interview.

  • A story. Here is an example of an story double page spread:

Double page spreads that are focused on a story are usually found in pop or television magazines and not in my genre (alternate). The spreads are usually a lot more colourful and have more pictures than other double page spread.

Even though they are rarely found here is a story double page spread from my genre:

Research and planning: Mise-en-sene Associated With Indie

Mise-en-scene Associated With Indie

Props-
Props used in indie magazines are often vintage, such as old cameras and stereo's. Other than this instruments are often used in images in indie magazines, for example an artist holding a guitar, also cigarettes often appear in indie magazines to give of an indie attitude/look.

Sets/Decor-
Sets associated with indie are either a blank background such as white or black, also places with graffiti or an old abandoned location.

Makeup-
Indie make-up seen on magazine's are often natural, for example like this:

However some people in indie wear more eye make-up, such as eyeliner or eye-shadow, although most models in indie magazine's just wear natural make-up.

Costume-
'Indie' has a very iconic style. I have previously done a full post about the style and costume of 'indie' and my model. For example casual indie style is skinny jeans, baggy shirts, baggy tee's, big jackets, vans, five panels etc. Whereas smart indie is skinny suit pants/jeans, shirt, bowtie/braces, bowl hat etc.

Poses-
There are 5 main poses used in indie magazines/the indie genre:

Dark:
For example, this pose has a stern face, with plenty of back in the picture and plays on achieving a dark/more gothic look. A dark look is also usually created when people are showing a triangle gesture with there hand, which is a gesture of illuminati, this can also create a dark image as people just look through the triangle with a stern/emotionless look.

                                                                                  Cute:

This image uses a 'cute' pose, to make her look almost doll like and to play on and to achieve a 'cute' look. This could be achieved by having my models hands near her face so that it makes them look shy and unsure, as when people have there hands around there face it usually shows shyness and shows childlike features.

Fun:
This model has created a fun looking pose by doing a dance motion and an 'Ok' hand gesture. This creates a feeling that the model is having fun and doesn't care what others think, as long as there having a good time, therefor that portrays the 'indie' genre, of being an individual. A fun pose could also be created by having a group of friends laughing etc.

                                                                    Natural:
A natural look is achieved by the model doing a blank and emotionless face, when a natural look is used it is usually used with a prop, gesture or something to make the image stand out as the face is just blank. A natural look can also be used to suggest the model is sad or stern looking.

Research and planning: Artists Associated With Indie

Artists Associated With Indie

Indie artists are all individual and can be very different types of artists. From research (such as my interviews and questionnaire's) here are a few popular indie artists:
Arctic Monkeys
The arctic monkeys are a band of 4. Bands are very popular in alternate/indie music, because live music and live bands are commonly related to indie/alternate music.

Arctic monkeys all have an indie look, with an indie style and indie attitude(such as smoking in magazine covers/photo-shoots, if this was in pop, that would not be acceptable).

Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding is partly a pop artists, acoustic artist and an indie artists. Even though she may appear in pop magazines as well, there is a difference in the type of image and story what would be used.

For example, in a pop magazine, there would be a smiley picture, with bright colours on and the story would be a positive story/what she has been unto and the good things she's been doing. Whereas in a indie magazine the image of her could be black+white and she probably wouldn't be smiling, also the story could be something about her misbehaving or a negative story, as indie magazines don't have to be careful with being a good influence to children.

Fall Out Boy
Fall out boy are another indie band, as I mentioned bands are extremely popular in the indie/alternate genre. In this picture you can tell the band are indie/alternate and not pop as there faces are not smiley or cheesy and are neutral or a bit stern, also there style is indie (hats, baggy shirts, baggy tee).

Linkin Park
Linkin Park are another band in indie and alternate music. Linkin parks logo appears on this picture (to the right of the text), the logo suggests they are an indie band as shapes are part of the mis-en-scence for indie and are very popular in clothing, logo's etc. You can also tell by there stern expression and the black/dark clothing.

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran is an indie and a pop artist. This would probably be used in a indie magazine and not pop, as it has dark colours and not bright and it is not a cheesy smiling picture.
Ed sheeran is an acoustic artist, which other than bands, are very popular in indie and alternate music.

Research and planning: My Positioning Statement

My Positioning Statement

In my music magazine I will have a positioning statement which will appear on the front cover, placed under the masthead. I have chosen three different possible positioning statement:
  • The alternative edge to music
  • Dare to Dream
  • Keeping it real
To decide which strap line to use I will use social media feedback, I used this as the target audience is teenagers/young adults and stereotypically they are who use social media most. For example if my target audience was an older generation I would not use social media to get feedback and would use an other way to ask people and get feedback.

Here is the question I asked about my positioning statement, via twitter:

Here are the replies I got:

4 people chose the first option which was
'The alternate edge to music'

2 people chose the second option which was
'Dare to Dream'

4 people also chose the third option which was
'Keeping it real'

The positioning statement which I will use is the third one 'Keeping it real' as it portrays my genre but not as straight forward and simple as the first positioning statement.

'Keeping it real' portrays my genre because in other genre's such as pop, there is a certain appearance or look which suggests perfection, the typical long hair, tanned, typical look that the media (such as pop) portray as 'perfection'. Where as on the other hand, the indie genre put out that it's good to be different and you don't have to have that perfect look in which pop culture portray. And realistically not everybody can be like that, that is why my genre puts across realism and reality into media, that is why I chose that strapline.

Research and planning: Costume And Prop List

Costume And Prop List

Costume List
My model is going to be wearing a style of casual alternative therefor, the costume will probably be
  • Skinny Jeans
  • Baggy tee/shirt
  • Bandana
  • Baggy jacket

Prop List
I am not sure weather I will use a prop/props, but if I do it will either be
  • Guitar
  • Microphone
  • Old stereo
  • Mic stand
I would use one of these so they would pot ray my genre of 'alternate/indie music'.

Other than these I will need a old location or unusual or even abandoned, to shoot my photo's in therefor it is also portraying my genre and has an unusual or alternative look.

Research and planning: Costume And Prop Research

Costume And Prop Research

As you have earlier seen in my collage, indie style has two different forms. Formal dress, which includes shirts, braces, bow ties, blazers etc. There is also informal dress which is less formal shirts, skinny jeans, vans, baggy jackets, denim jackets etc.
For girls formal is usually a smart blouse/alternative dress, and for less formal a cut tee/tee, shorts, tights, skirts, skinny jeans etc.
There is also a lot of headwear such as beanies, five pannes, bandanas etc.

My model will probably be wearing a shirt, skinny jeans and a bandana.
Maybe with a guitar to show that is is an indie music magazine.
